THE BEE HIVE BAND
The Bee Hive Band
The Beehive Band began performing together as a trio in 2017, after a chance performance opportunity. Their vocal blend, akin to Parton, Harris, and Ronstadt, is the core of the ensemble and what started as three classically-trained voices with guitar has expanded to include multiple instruments and additional players - friends of the hive who buzz in and out as their schedules allow.
Their cover set list includes music from all genres, reimagined for the trio's unique sound, and often focusing on women's issues, perspectives, and voices. A friend has said, "The Beehive Band is what would happen John Denver and Alanis Morisette had triplets." An apt description! They also have a small list of original works by Amy Luckenbill, that center on stories of a woman's mid-life and love and rely heavily on trio harmonies.
Brenda Stursma, Emily Wadhams, and Amy Luckenbill are the core members. Independent of the band, and true to its femme-focus, they fill many roles outside of the hive: business owner, corporate manager, music therapist, doctor, mother, wife, lover, performer, confidant, and friend.
They play regularly at wineries, bars, coffee houses, churches, festivals, music in the park, and political events.
They can be found on their website at thebeehiveband.com, on Facebook, and on their YouTube channel.

Brenda Stursma |
Brenda is our vocal Swiss Army knife. Singing high, low, and everything in between, she can find the toughest harmonies and often does vocal gymnastics to work around melodies that move up and down a lot!
Recently an empty-nester, she and #hubbee Mark have two boys in college this fall. She is looking forward to the extra time to pick up her instruments again. We can't wait to see what new honey we can make when she does! |
Emily Wadhams |
Emily is our resident Mother Earth alto, who always lays the foundation for a honey-sweet harmony. She is a board certified Music Therapist with a collection of instruments, both serious and playful, that keep our swarm stocked with fun things to play and new sounds to play with! She regularly plays guitar for the group and recently picked up the bass to round out our instrumental sound. We joke that she brings the #BigBassEnergy!
She and her #hubbee Jeremy have a houseful of school-aged kiddos and cats, and she also owns a thriving practice, Omaha Music Therapy. |
Amy Luckenbill |
Amy is the group's songwriter and wordy wordsmith. She fills in the vocal gaps where she can and loves singing the middle part to blend harmonies. A lifelong pianist and former choral conductor, music educator, and church musician, she spent her extra hours during the pandemic learning the guitar, which has added a new dimension to the group! She says, "It takes a long time to get piano hands to do what guitar hands do!"
She and #hubbee Don have to two teen-aged boys. They are both excited that the youngest to started driving himself this year. |
Susan Hendrick |
A lifelong Nebraska girl, Susan has been whacking round objects with sticks since she was ten years old. There’s something very natural, primal, and cathartic about playing drums. Metaphorically, Susan believes drumming is the foundation of the home, whilst the other musicians are the walls and roof that sit on top. It’s not about how fancy or intricate the drums can be; rather, it’s about how the drums support and complement the song.
When she’s not pounding out rhythm, Susan and her #hubbee of 25 years enjoy eating Indian food, traveling to weird faraway places, and feeding the squirrels in their backyard. |
Kyle Knapp |
Somehow, Kyle manages to fit right into this hive full of queen bees. He plays anything we throw at him, with spirit and aplomb, and we couldn't be more honored that he graciously carves out time to join us regularly.
He and #WifBee, Gayle, are empty nesters and often welcome recording artists to their home to work in Kyle's recording studio. You can find information on Kyle's solo schedule at kyleknapp.com. Be sure to sign up for his newsletter for regular updates on his performance schedule. |
